GRE Exam
The Graduate Record Examinations® (GRE®) General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and critical thinking and analytical writing skills. The GRE® Subject Tests gauge undergraduate achievement in 8 specific fields of study.
GRE General Test :
The GRE® General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study.
GRE Subject Test :
The GRE® Subject Tests gauge undergraduate achievement in eight specific fields of study and can help forecast a candidate's potential for success in graduate school. Each Subject Test is intended for students who have majored in or have extensive background in that specific area.

Revisions to the Computer-based GRE General Test (GRE Exam) in 2008

Princeton, N.J. (December 21, 2007) —Beginning in January 2008, the GRE Exam Program will begin including reformatted reading passages in the Verbal Reasoning section of the computer-based GRE® General Test. Currently, reading passages accompanying Reading Comprehension questions contain line numbers that reference specific parts of the passages. Those line numbers will be replaced with highlighting when necessary in order to focus the test taker on specific information in the passage.
The reformatted question types are part of the continuing improvements to the General Test. During this time, test takers may encounter both formats in their tests.
"We believe the new format will help students more easily find the pertinent information in reading passages," explains David Payne, Associate Vice President in ETS’s Higher Education Division. "The GRE Exam Program will begin counting these question types toward examinee scores as soon as an adequate sample of data from the operational testing environment is available."

In November 2007, two new question types were included in the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections of the computer-based GRE® General Test.
